‘Ow!’ cried Daniel. Just as he lifted his hand to his ear, a big wave came along. The ship heaved up. The plank wobbled. Daniel put his arms out to steady himself but it was no good.

He saw Captain Wetbeard smiling as he wobbled more and more.

‘Down he goes!’ Wetbeard said. The water flew off his chin as he shook his head in joy.

Daniel fell off the plank. He could feel the air rushing past his head as he plunged down.

Splash!

Daniel hit the water and went under. He felt himself go deep down. He held his breathe hoping he would come to the surface soon.

His clothes were heavy in the water, weighing him down. He kicked his legs as hard as he could to lift his head above water. Just when he thought he could not last a second longer without taking a breath, his head reached the surface and he was able to gulp some air.
